A 32-year-old nurse has been accused of killing five boys and two girls and attempting to kill 10 other babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Britain.

Lucy Letby is suspected of using insulin as a means of poisoning babies and children.

Letby was first arrested on suspicion of committing the offenses in 2018, Cheshire Police said in a statement. A year later she was arrested again "on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of 8 babies and the attempted murder of 6 babies", as well as "the attempted murder of three other babies", the police added. The trial of the 32-year-old, who denies the charges against her, could last up to six months.

Speaking for the prosecution, barrister Nick Johnson said child deaths in the hospital's neonatal unit were statistically the same as other units in the UK before January 2015. He said this changed dramatically in the following 18 months, during in which the hospital found a significant increase in the number of infant deaths and in the number of severe cases.

After investigating the sudden spike in deaths and serious medical complications, Johnson said hospital authorities found Letby's presence to be a "common denominator." He also claimed the pattern continued when the 32-year-old changed her work schedule.
