"Camorra" is a criminal organization that is made up of hundreds of gangs, which join, split and join again, without any rules and without any discipline. Its structure is distributed.
There are times when it is also hierarchically structured, seeking to imitate the strong Sicilian mafia.
It took this form especially in the period when it was led by the boss Rafael Kutolo and was called "NCO" ("new organized Camorra"). Then there was another attempt, when it was led by the Bardelino-Nuovoleta-Alfieri trio, three powerful bosses. The hierarchical structure was destined to last for some time, in a historical and social context far different from the Sicilian one.
"Camorra" has a confederal distribution, making alliances according to the interests of the moment. In other words, alliances when interests and activities at a given moment ripen into certain groups. Conflicts between them, the birth of new clans are also possible. "Camorra" has its headquarters in Campina, Naples. This organization has a pronounced horizontal and distributed structure, being formed by groups that easily join and separate from each other. Currently, it includes 100 small organizations with about 6700 members.
There is no regional or provincial commission and it has not committed murders such as "Cosa Nostra". "Camorra" has a different control of the territory than "Cosa Nostra". It develops its control over the economy of the poorest families and social classes. Its clans are very covered, since entering them does not require special rules. No rites of a sacred character are used. From the very way it was built and how it operates, "Camorra" has not reacted to the state as an alternative organism. On the other hand, precisely these features, considered as weaknesses in relation to other criminal organizations, do not allow it to "enjoy" the potency of such impunity, which, for example, "Cosa Nostra" enjoys. Consequently, it has been constantly more discovered.
Code of honor for members of "Cosa Nostra".
The first cell is composed of the "family", a territorially based structure that controls an area of the city or an entire residential center, from which it gets its name.
The family is composed of coordinated "men of honor" or "soldiers" and is led by an elected chief also called the "representative", who is followed by a "deputy chief" and by one or more "advisors".
If random events make the normal election of the chief by the family members impossible, the "commission" organizes the appointment of "council members" to temporarily administer the family until the time of the normal elections.
The activity of the families is coordinated by a collegial body called "commission" or "cupola", which includes representatives of three or more close families.
The committee is headed by one of the representatives of the families. The commission has a wide range of action, as well as the task of ensuring compliance with the rules of Cosa Nostra within each family, and above all, to resolve conflicts between families.
No less important are the rules that discipline the "recruitment" of "men of honor" and issues of their behavior.
The requirements for recruitment are: the gift of courage and lack of mercy; a transparent family situation, and above all the absence of any kind of connection with the police.
The test of courage is not required of those characters who serve as representatives. According to an expression of Salvatore Contorno, repentant member of Cosa Nostra, this includes the "clean face" of the mafia, i.e. professionals, public administrators, entrepreneurs, who are generally not involved in criminal activities.
The person whose data is used above is carefully approached to test their availability to become part of the society. Upon obtaining consent, the novice membership is carried out at an outdoor location. In the presence of at least three men of the family, where he will be a part, the ceremony of swearing loyalty to Cosa Nostra takes place.
The person in question holds a holy image in his hands, sprinkles it with the blood of one of his fingers, sets it on fire, and then holds it in his hands until it goes out, repeating the formula and oath that ends with the phrase: "I was burned like this holy figure if I betray my oath”.
The status of "man of honor" once obtained ends only in death; the mafioso, whatever the circumstances of his life, wherever he resides, in Italy or abroad, always remains so.
The "man of honor", after having finished the oath, begins to know the secrets of Cosa Nostra and come into contact with other members. Only the Corleone and Resuttana families have never officially disclosed the names of their members to the heads of other families.
In any case, the acquaintance of the "man of honor" with the facts of Cosa Nostra depends fundamentally on the rank he will have in the organization, in the sense that the higher he is, the greater the opportunities for him to learn facts and get in touch with "men of honor" of other families.
Every "honorable man" is obliged to respect the "burden of silence": he cannot reveal to foreigners his membership in the mafia, much less the secrets of Cosa Nostra; this is perhaps the most ironclad rule of Cosa Nostra.
Inside the organization, excessive gossip is usually not appreciated: the circulation of news is reduced to the minimum necessary and the "man of honor" should refrain from asking too many questions because this is a sign of misplaced curiosity and leads to suspicions. to the person in question.
When men of honor talk among themselves about matters related to Cosa Nostra they have an absolute obligation to tell the truth, and when it comes to "men of honor" of different families it is good to have a third person assist in the conversation who can confirm the content of the conversation.
Whoever does not tell the truth suffers severe sanctions ranging from expulsion to the death of the person in question.
These concepts are of fundamental importance to evaluate the statements made by the "men of honor", that is, by the members of Cosa Nostra and to interpret the behaviors and conversations.
The oath formula of "Cosa Nostra".
The person seeking membership holds a holy image in his hands, sprinkles it with the blood of one of his fingers, sets it on fire, and then holds it in his hands until it goes out, repeating the formula and oath.
"I swear that I will respect the "burden of silence". I will not reveal to strangers my membership nor the secrets of "Cosa Nostra". I will not ask excessive questions and I will never become curious about anything. I will be content with what I know myself and what you tell me. I will always tell the truth about all those issues related to "Cosa Nostra". I do not have and will never have anything to do with the police. I was burned like this holy figure sprinkled with my blood, if I betray my oath."
