Had sister with cancer, woman threatens bank staff with gun to take her savings

A woman walked into a bank with a toy gun in an attempt to steal $13,000 she had in her checking account to pay for her sister's cancer treatment. Sali Hafiz made this decision after she could not withdraw her savings from the bank in Lebanon, as withdrawals in this country are limited. A person can withdraw only 200-400 Dollars per month.

The Middle Eastern country continues to suffer an economic crisis, which has spurred activists into action after years of turmoil. Earlier this month, the UN warned that nearly three-quarters of people in Lebanon have been pushed into poverty, reports The Mirror.

Hafiz accompanied by a group called "Association of Anger of Depositors" asked the bank counter in the capital of Beirut for her savings.

The video quickly went viral on social media in Lebanon, showing Hafiz holding a pistol while her co-workers argued with bank staff – who eventually began counting the notes and handed them to Hafiz.

Hafiz live-streamed the video on Facebook, saying: I did not enter the bank to kill anyone or set the place on fire. I am here to claim my rights. Hafiz was later interviewed by Al Jadeed News in which she claimed that her gun was actually a plastic toy that she had borrowed from her nephew.

She added that her sister's medical bills for cancer treatment had left her with little choice because the bank had previously advised her that she was not entitled to withdraw more than $200 a month.
