British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke after an emergency meeting with European leaders in Paris on the Ukraine issue. He said that it is not just the future of Ukraine that is at stake, but an existential issue for Europe as a whole, the BBC reports.

According to him, it is a moment that encompasses the entire collective security of Europe, adding that only a lasting peace that preserves Ukraine's sovereignty will deter Russian President Vladimir Putin "from further aggression in the future."

"We must recognize the new era we are in, not clinging hopelessly to the comforts of the past. It is time for us to take responsibility for our security, for our continent," Starmer declared, while emphasizing that Britain will take a leading responsibility.

Regarding the option of deploying British peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, Starmer said he would be open to it "if there had been some planning about how many troops would be needed and what their role would be."

"I think we are making progress here," the British prime minister said, adding that there is a need for discussions on a lasting peace.
