The world condemns Hamas' attack on Israel

The United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany and other countries have issued statements affirming Israel's right to defend itself and calling for a cease-fire.

The US said it condemned the attack by "Hamas terrorists", adding: "We stand with the Government and people of Israel".

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the Pentagon would work to make sure Israel "has what it needs to defend itself."

US President Joe Biden said the US is ready to "provide all necessary means to support" Israel after the Hamas attack and warned "that no other party hostile to Israel" should try to take advantage of the situation.

Biden spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday after the outbreak of violence, and the US leader said that "Israel has the right to defend itself and its people."

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, said that he has spoken with the President and Prime Minister of Israel.

"France stands in solidarity with Israel and Israelis, committed to their security and their right to defend themselves," Macron said.

An adviser to Iran's supreme leader said his country supports the "proud operation", ISNA news agency reported. During a plenary session on October 7, Iranian lawmakers chanted "Down with Israel" and "Down with America."

In Lebanon, the militant group Hezbollah praised Hamas and said the attack on Israel had "divine support".

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Russia have called on both sides to show restraint. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov called for "an immediate ceasefire and peace".

On Sunday, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting regarding the violence in the Middle East.

The council will discuss "the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue," the statement said.

Israel has maintained a strict blockade on Gaza since Hamas took over the territory in 2007. Restrictions on the movement of goods and people have destroyed the economy in Gaza, but Israel has said the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching militant groups.
