Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is "at war" with Hamas militants who control the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Netanyahu's comments in a televised address followed a large-scale Hamas attack on Israel at dawn on Saturday. Netanyahu ordered the mobilization of reservists and vowed that Hamas would "pay a price it has never known before."

"We are at war," Mr. Netanyahu said. "Not in an operation, not in a round, but in war."

The prime minister also ordered the army to clear the cities of infiltrating Hamas militants.

Hamas hit Israel with thousands of rockets on Saturday as dozens of fighters crossed the fortified border, in a massive show of force that caught Israel off guard.

Emergency services say at least 40 Israelis have been killed and hundreds injured in the Palestinian attack.

The Israeli military said it responded with airstrikes in Gaza, where witnesses reported heavy explosions and killings.

Hamas military commander Mohammad Deif announced the start of the operation in a broadcast on the group's media, calling on all Palestinians everywhere to fight.

"This is the day of the biggest battle to end the last occupation on earth," he said, adding that 5,000 rockets had been fired at Israel.

Saturday's attack was hailed by Iran and the militant group Hezbollah, while widely condemned by Western diplomacy.

The last major outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas occurred during the 10-day war in 2021.
