The head of the European Union's foreign policy, Josep Borrel, said that on September 14, he will host the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia in Brussels for a high-level meeting.
He announced the meeting in a press conference at the end of a meeting of the European Union's foreign ministers, stressing that the meeting will seek solutions to the current situation between the two countries.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, met for the last time on May 2. While the situation in the north of Kosovo became tense from the end of May after groups of Serbian citizens went on protests to oppose the sending of the Albanian mayors who emerged from the April elections, which were boycotted by the Serbian political parties, with police to their offices.
At the beginning of June, the European Union requested the reduction of tensions through the suspension of police operations in the north, the relocation of mayors to alternative offices and the announcement of early elections with the unconditional participation of Kosovo Serbs.
The government of Kosovo has already halved the presence of police units in municipal buildings in the north and has agreed to organize new elections, while calling for the European Union to remove punitive measures against Kosovo for lack of coordination regarding developments in the north.
But the European Union has said the government's actions "are important steps in the right direction, but more steps are needed" to ease the crisis in the north and early elections should be held as soon as possible.
