The former leader of the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, Igor Girkin, has declared that he will run for the post of president in Russia.

Girkin, who is known in the West as one of the perpetrators of the Malaysian Airlines plane crash in 2014 in Ukraine where 298 passengers lost their lives, is currently in prison.

He has been accused of extremism, since on social media channels, he has taken harsh positions on the way Russia is conducting the war in Ukraine.

In a manifesto published on social networks, Girkin attacks Putin as he announces his candidacy for the presidential elections to be held next year.

According to Girkin, the current president of Russia is too soft to lead the war in Ukraine.

"I don't have any friends, even millionaires, I find it difficult to make friends who are entrepreneurs, in general I have few friends and mostly they are poor people", writes Girkin.

He ends his text with a promise that he will not become a long-serving president. His health would not allow this: “I am not as athletic and healthy as [Putin] was at my age, so I will not be able to bother you, dear voters, for the next 20 years simply physically", he writes.

Some experts have seen this as a "sale" of Girgin to Putin, agreeing to become a "puppet" in a presidential election that probably has no chance of winning by any candidate other than Putin.
