Fahri Musliu, a well-known journalist of the Yugoslav era, with a rich career in several media, notably Rilindja e Pristina, but also Voice of America, BBC, Radiotelevision i Kosova, associate of Al Jazeera Balkans, at the same time one of the co-founders of the Association of Independent of the Journalists of Serbia, he has been suffering from media rumors both in Serbia and Kosovo for years that he is the real father of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. This is due to a similarity as well as the fact that he was once a colleague of Vucic's mother, Angjelina, for whom he has a high regard.
Finally, this topic has been reactivated in Serbia, in the context of the political war there, which forced President Vucic to react with a statement, categorically denying the alluded Kosovar paternity, as attacked by the opposition.
In an interview for Al Jazeera Balkans , Musliu recounts how he experiences this allusion to him.
Your name and reputation are already being misused in Serbia...
It is certainly not the first time, as my name has been mentioned for 13 years in various media and among citizens across the Balkans, such as those of Spanish or Turkish series, and apparently it will not be the last time either. My name and reputation as a journalist is now being misused in the political struggle in Serbia. And President Vučić reacted to some slander from unknown portals and in a few days mentioned my name several times in several TV appearances. Later, a video with his father also appeared, I don't know why. That video is circulating on social networks and portals and Vucic proves that I am not his father, which caused an avalanche of reactions in Serbia and Kosovo and throughout the Balkans.
The most disgusting was a written statement by the chief of staff of the president of Kosovo on platform X, which was reported by almost all media in Kosovo. There was backlash from a colleague and several other public figures who called for his resignation, and my daughter, who is a journalist, reacted very strongly in a long text on Facebook. It was a monstrous statement by a person from Kosovo on Top News from Tirana. This is actually the atmosphere created by the repetition of slander.
To talk about one's national origin, who is his father or mother, and demand that it be determined by DNA analysis, making it a national issue - is evidence of the state of mind and frustration of people and society as a whole . This is happening in Serbia, in Kosovo, but also in Albania, which is evidence that these people still live in a kind of tribal relationship according to the definition of blood and soil.
Have you spoken to anyone about this defamation, which certainly has had a serious impact on your family?
I did not want to comment on that first statement of President Vučić in which he mentions my name, because it is disgusting to comment on it and deal with slander, whoever it is. It is miserable and sad, as well as primitive and very irresponsible when, first of all, politicians, but also journalists deal with rumors, fabrications, slandering the privacy of others, for the sake of some personal interest and powerlessness, dirty, without thinking that they are causing great harm, insult and mental pain to the other persons mentioned. This is proof of their powerlessness, especially among politicians. Let Serbs and Albanians, as well as other Balkans, have fun with nonsense, as it is in their blood to deal with gossip, slander and other people's lives to the point of collective ecstasy. This proves that they have no private life, no personal and professional identity.
I have never met Aleksandar Vucic. The only thing is that a few years ago I asked several times, through his media contact service, to wait for me to discuss this slander, but only once I received the answer that "the president cannot wait for me because he is too busy occupied".
Were you forced to deny the fiction?
I repeat, I have known his mother Angjelina since 1985 or 1986, as well as dozens of colleagues, journalists from all over the previous country, when we met for the first time in the Assembly of the RSFJ or Serbia, from where we reported as correspondents, she for RTV Novi Sad, and I for the Pristina daily Rilindja. That union in assemblies lasted until the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia and the formation of the new Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. She was a classy, educated and cultured woman, a true professional journalist, a sincere colleague and friend, a good wife and a very devoted mother. And I'm sorry that even she in the old days experienced such traumas from dishonest people who don't care about truth and facts.
Has your bio been faked too?
I have never worked in Serbian Television (Radiotelevision i Belgrade or Radiotelevision Novi Sad), nor in Tanjug, as some psychopaths declare or various media write, someone even mentions that I came to Belgrade in 1968. And the truth is this the following, which I repeat for the umpteenth time, even though the facts are not important for individuals and some media, not to mention social networks. After graduating from high school, in June 1967, on November 1, I started working as a teacher at the "29 Nëntori" Primary School in the village of Brodosavcë, municipality of Dragash. I worked there until the end of November 1969, when I entered APJ. After completing my military service on April 28, 1971, I continued to work at the same school until mid-October 1972, when I came to Belgrade to study. On November 1, 1972, I started working as a manual worker in the Belgrade Municipal Cleaning, I left my wife at home with a six-month-old child and an old mother. And now how can I be the father of Aleksandar Vucic, who was born on March 5, 1970?
In Kosovo, as well as in Serbia, you expressed your often unsolicited views. Has the campaign to smear and question your views continued, in light of new lies uttered and broadcast publicly?
I am myself and have always, since high school, expressed my views that are correct for me and undesirable for anyone, especially the so-called turbo-patriots of both wings, whose patriotism serves to cover up their flaws and incompetence .
Because of my views, I am often targeted by vigilante patriots and critics of everything that exists, who do it for some petty personal interests and engage in harsh campaigns, without choosing to cooperate, for which I pay a price of up. I, as well as my children, whom I raised with that spirit, that truth, sincerity, morality, honesty are the greatest human virtues, despite the fact that we live in a land where immorality, lies, provincialism reigns and in all the Balkan space, where people do not care about themselves and their problems, but behave with others in a very vulgar and corrupt way.
Do you see any possibility that actualizing old lies will do anyone any good politically?
I see no possibility. On the contrary, they bring evil because they cause hatred, revenge, violence and even lynching, as is happening to me. Because, for immoral and primitive societies, the revival of old lies and slanders is entertainment, spiritual food and a cure for frustration. Balkan likes to enjoy the suffering of others….
Do you have the support of professional colleagues from Kosovo and Serbia?
Unfortunately I have none, with exceptions. No more collegiality, solidarity and respect. The media started lynching me, first in Serbia, then in Kosovo and other parts of the Balkans. In 2010, they transferred some articles from Millovan Brkic's Tabloid magazine, and in October 2014, a part of the text from a rather problematic Croatian portal (Dnevno.hr), without checking the facts and using the "copy paste" system, started an avalanche . Then the media in Kosovo lynched me for five days, even the editors of the Radio Television of Kosovo portal, whose correspondent I was for eight years, until the end of 2014. At the request of the director general, they intervened in Wikipedia and falsified the biography of Aleksandar Vucic, writing that I was his biological father and that they published on their portal. That's what the person who carried out that director's order told me. This is evidence that journalism and journalists lack professionalism, because they know neither standards nor ethics.
When that big hunt started in 2014, in Kosovo and Albania there were journalists who with their writings took my side in "my defense", i.e. in defense of the truth, but not the Association of Journalists of Kosovo. A few years later there were reactions in Serbia as well, NUNS, Danas, NM magazine and several other portals reacted by broadcasting my interview published on the Remarker portal in 2017, in which I presented the facts. But the other media didn't care about that and they went on their way.
When we spoke exactly six years ago, you mentioned that you were thinking of leaving Kosovo, seeking asylum. You probably don't think so now. Then your family had problems. how is it today
Yes, I said that not for myself, but for my 10- and 15-year-old children and grandchildren who were the target of attacks, insults and traumatization because "their uncle is a Serb". However, I don't think so now, because I have a lot of support from my family, and my grandchildren are grown up, so they understand the truth and can deal with that nonsense.
How do you see the relations between Serbia and Kosovo today, negotiations for the future seem to have fallen?
The best proof of these relations is the behavior of politicians, citizens and the media of both sides. Even after 24 years since the end of the war, relations have not improved, moreover the distance and hatred have deepened. Some time ago we had a terrorist group penetrate the territory of Kosovo, in the Banjska Monastery, for the sake of "protecting the Serbs". Several people died there. When politicians who are able to resolve misunderstandings accuse each other and declare that they do not believe or lie that others want war, we should not expect anything good from this.
Unfortunately, those negotiations were called dialogue - I don't know why when Serbia signed the capitulation in Kumanovo in June 1999 - when Kosovo declared independence in February 2008 and was recognized by more than 110 countries. These negotiations take a long time and without concrete results, because each party accuses the other of being guilty for not respecting the agreement. The European Union and the entire Western community have shown themselves to be powerless to speed up that process, or have any interest of their own, and all this is to the detriment of the Albanians and Serbs, above all the Serbs in Kosovo who are hostages of Belgrade's politics and Pristina and live between anvils and hammers.
I think that the USA and the EU have finally realized that they have to speed up the resolution of those relations for the sake of their interests and for the benefit of the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia.
