Çavuşoğlu threatens Greece: You will suffer the consequences as in the
Mevlut Cavusoglu

On Monday morning, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made direct threats against Greece, continuing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's rhetoric, accusing Greece of provocations.

"Although we say that the rights of neighbors must be respected on both sides of the Aegean, the Greeks continue to provoke themselves. If you start an adventure on behalf of others, you will suffer the consequences as it has happened in the past. This is a warning for Greece", said the Turkish Foreign Minister.

Speaking at an event in Haimana province, Cavusoglu continued in the same defiant tone, saying that 951 years ago with the Battle of Mazikert, Turkey made Anatolia its homeland. He added that this is the spirit that protected the homeland for 100 years, the same spirit applies today.

"So gather your wits and pull yourself together. We address Greece primarily. Do not be instruments of others, do not continue challenges. Because Turkey's friendship is good, but its enmity is tragic.' "Keep this in mind," concluded Mevlut Çavuşoğlu.

This is the first public statement by a Turkish official following the messages that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent to Turkey during his presence at the TIF over the weekend. Mitsotakis called Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent statements "unacceptable," adding that "the continued aggression of the entire Turkish political establishment is extremely problematic."

"I understand why they focus on nationalism before the elections. They are wrong, they are poisoning Turkish society and good neighborly relations. We will not follow Turkey and Mr. Erdogan in the barrage of provocative statements. It would be irresponsible and out of character for me. We will give clear answers and highlight internationally the distortion that Turkey is trying to increase the tension and show that Greece is responsible", said the prime minister.

In March, the ongoing dispute between Athens and Ankara over several islands in the Aegean calmed down again for a short time, but two months later the two countries continued their military maneuvers in the region. Turkey accuses Greece of violating international treaties that regulate the borders of the two countries by deploying the army on the islands. Greece, on the other hand, points to Turkish threats that required a military presence on its eastern border.
