Andy Burnham elected new leader of the British Labour Party: We will give people

Andy Burnham has been officially elected as the new leader of the Labour Party in Great Britain, after being the only candidate to meet the criteria and receive the full support of MPs and unions.

In his first speech as Labour leader, Burnham was met with thunderous applause as he praised the work of his predecessor, Keir Starmer, saying he had led the party from its deepest defeat to its greatest victory. However, Burnham delivered a strong message of change, acknowledging that the last generation of politicians had failed ordinary people.

"This is our last chance to change and we must seize it together. People expect us to keep our promises and we will do so. I want to bring the path of hope that we have long lacked," Burnham declared.

The new leader promised to follow an "authentic Labour" line and fight to devolve power from central London to local communities. He promised stronger control over vital sectors such as housing, water, energy and transport, which he said were wrongly privatised in the 1980s, impoverishing citizens.
