Bad weather with storms and hail and rain in the north and fires in the south are leading Italy to declare a state of emergency.

The decision is expected to be taken tomorrow by the authorities, while the regions have started to calculate the damage to buildings, infrastructure and agriculture.

The regions heading towards declaring a state of emergency are Lombardy, Sicily, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Friuli and Venice.

The Minister of Civil Defense Nello Musumeci, who had telephone contacts with the governors of the districts in question, will report tomorrow to the Council of Ministers on the situation.

"The parameters of the disaster conditions will be verified and with my proposal the emergency will be resolved," said Musumeci.

Pending a more detailed quantification of damages, a decree with ad hoc rules for the redundancy fund of construction and agricultural workers may be adopted at tomorrow's meeting.

Meanwhile, the extreme weather has so far left 5 victims behind. A 16-year-old girl was killed by a tree that fell on her tent at a scouting camp in Valcamonica, Brescia province. Three people were killed in fires still raging around Palermo and Sicily, and another died in Reggio Emilia.

"I have never seen anything like this in 65 years," said the mayor of Milan when asked about the storms in Lombardy that severely damaged the traffic lights system, the railway and the cabs of the electric buses.

As for the fire in Vieste, the flames have burned tourist facilities on the seashore and two 70-year-olds were found burned in a house engulfed in flames near Falcone Borsellino airport.

Meanwhile, an 88-year-old woman who died in San Martino delle Scale because the fire prevented the ambulance from rescuing her.

Almost 2,000 people have been evacuated due to the terrible fires that have lasted for more than 24 hours, destroying forests, hilly areas, parks and residential centers in different parts of the island.
