Bomb attack in Monaco, Ukrainian oligarch Vadim Ermolaev and two family members

Three people were injured, two of them in critical condition, yesterday evening in the Principality of Monaco, as a result of an explosion caused by a "deliberate act", authorities announced.

The explosion occurred in a residential building on Rue du Révérend Père Louis Frolla, near the border with France.

"It is very likely that this was an assassination attempt," Minister of State (Prime Minister) Christophe Mirmand told AFP. Among the injured are a couple aged between 50 and 60, whose lives are in danger, as well as a 13-year-old teenager, "most likely a relative of the couple", who suffered minor injuries.

According to information published by Le Figaro, the three injured are members of the same Ukrainian family of the Kiev oligarch, Vadim Ermolaev.

The explosion occurred at around 9:00 p.m. in a residential building between Boulevard d'Italie and Rue du Révérend Père Louis Frolla, near the French border. Bolts and metal spheres were found inside the explosive device.

According to Monaco's Attorney General, Stéphane Thibault, a person had left a bag or package in the lobby of the building before leaving. Authorities have also released a photo of the suspect. The Interregional Directorate of the Judicial Police of Alpes-Maritimes is involved in the investigation, while the gendarmerie has been deployed at the entrances to the motorways. Officers from the BAC of Nice have also been sent to assist, as well as police patrols from Nice and Menton.

"This evening's attack is a tragedy that has struck Monaco. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and the people of Monaco," Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti wrote on the X network. "We express our full support for the security forces and emergency services engaged on the ground."

"A terrible crime", "a shock for the entire Monegasque community". This is how Prince Albert II of Monaco described the event in a statement, commenting on the injury of Ukrainian oligarch Vadim Ermolaev and two other people after an explosive device exploded in the micro-state.

"The Principality of Monaco will remain united and determined in the face of violence and criminality," he said. "The security of our community has always been a priority and will continue to be so, despite the threats."

According to a source close to the investigation, Vadim Ermolaev, a resident of Monaco, has been under sanctions since December 2023, following a decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to several media outlets, citing Ukrainian secret services, these sanctions are related to the multimillionaire's decision to continue his activity in the alcohol trade in Crimea, a territory under Russian occupation.

The identities of the victims have not been officially confirmed by Monaco authorities. Attorney General Stéphane Thibault is expected to hold a press conference later in the day, according to a statement from Minister of State Christophe Mirmand.

Thibault told AFP that the explosive device was placed inside a bag or package left in the building's lobby before the perpetrator left.

Around 50 firefighters, including around ten reinforcements from France, were deployed to help the injured. At the same time, 84 public security officers were deployed to secure the area.

According to sources close to the French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, "a police operation has been launched to find the perpetrator, who is still at large." According to Mirmand, several witnesses have provided information that could help identify him. The suspect was filmed by security cameras in Monaco and Beausoleil, the neighboring French town, where he is suspected of having crossed on foot.
