One of the dictatorship's most notorious prisons and camps, Spaçi, has returned to the spotlight in recent days.

Published photos and videos showed that the buildings where thousands of political prisoners suffered, where they were tortured and worked in the deadly mines in the area, were being painted and plastered.

The failed projects of state institutions were attempting to cover up one of the most serious wounds of our society.

Rightly so, there were strong reactions, with the most important actors undoubtedly being those who suffered in that camp and prison.

They proved that paint and "makeup" cannot hide the torture that took place within those walls.

The darkness of the buildings perfectly conveys what the convicts and internees have suffered.

But who did the restoration?! Which institution or firm ordered and carried out useless work on those buildings?!

In April 2024, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage finalized the tender for Spaç Prison.

According to documents exclusively available to VoxNews, the winning firm that carried out those works is called " MARTINI KONSTRUKSION & REAL ESTATE" sh.pk , owned by Benard Martini, who was a candidate for deputy of the Social Democratic Party in 2021.

The documents state that the tender is for "conservation-restoration interventions at Spaç Prison".

The allocated fund was 12,792,136 lek, or about 130 thousand euros. The winner was announced in early April 2024.

The contract was signed in mid-April, and the firm had several weeks to complete the work.

The intervention in an important object, which shows the time that Albania has passed, should have been done by a firm licensed to intervene in such works.

In fact, proper projects and analyses had to be done, in order for the object not to lose its identity.

But, the facts show that the firm that carried out those works was connected to the government, to political parties, and had no experience.

The owner of the company "MARTINI KONSTRUKSION & REAL ESTATE" is Benard Martini , who had a scaffolding company. He ran for the PSD in 2021, while declaring that he has been prosecuted several times for various criminal offenses.

Naturally, the company won the tender and continued the works to meet the deadlines. However, the decision-making of this Institute remains very questionable, as it entrusts such a historic building to an unknown firm without undergoing restoration, and moreover, the owner has been prosecuted.

Martini himself stated before the CEC that there was a file in the Tirana Prosecutor's Office in 2016. The first file was for property destruction.

The second file, in 2015, was also filed with the Tirana Prosecutor's Office for "illegal construction".

And the third file, in 2009, for "theft".

We do not know if Martini's previous convictions were a criterion for winning the tender, especially in a former prison.

But what is very questionable remains the quality of the works and their execution to "erase" part of the history of thousands of Albanians who lost their lives and were tortured in Spaç.
