Who was the agent who organized the operation "Wrath of God" against the Palestinian terrorists. It inspired the film "Munich" by Steven Spielberg.

In today's Mossad, the image of Mike Harari has become a myth that does not fade with time.

"We will never know most of the main things he did for us", said the former Minister of Defense, Moshe Yaalon, showing him as an example.

"I simply did my duty," he always explained: "I was never a killer. What I have done, I have always done to protect Israel." He died in 2014 at the age of 87 in his home in Afeka, north of Tel Aviv, where he still kept the pistol of many missions on display.

A super agent that Steven Spielberg made famous all over the world in 2005, when he shot the movie "Munich", showing one of the most impressive "revenge" orchestrated by the secret services.

Operation Wrath of God, where the Israelis went to every corner of the globe, killing one by one the 11 Palestinians responsible for the massacre at the '72 Munich Olympics. "Moshe Ivgy, the actor who played me, was good," commented Mike.

On the morning of September 5, 1972, during the Munich Olympic Games, a group of Palestinian terrorists attacked the apartments of Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village, killing two of them and taking nine others hostage.

The terrorists were part of a group, called "Black September", who demanded that Israel, in exchange for hostages, release more than 230 Arab prisoners and two German terrorists held in Israeli prisons.

In another shootout, at Munich airport, nine Israeli hostages were killed along with five terrorists and a West German policeman. The Olympic competitions were suspended for 24 hours to pay tribute to the slain athletes.

Operation "Wrath of God"

As a result of the murders at the 1972 Olympic Games, the Israeli government, led by Golda Meir, recruited a group of agents, the Mossad, to find and kill the killers of "Black September". Stephen Spielberg's film Munich is based on these events.

A secret, very fast and flexible bureaucratic chain was immediately set in motion between the Mossad, the Israeli secret service agency, and a panel of ministers who together became known as the "X Commission", which met to gave approval for any murder.

Because the Israelis did not want to be accused of using the same methods as the terrorists, a critical factor was that no one should be able to make a direct connection between the killings and Israel. Mike Harari was put at the head of the Mossad group.

Within weeks, Mike Harari's team was on the trail of its first target: Vael Zvaiter, a 30-year-old translator at the Libyan embassy in Rome. To his Western friends, Zvaiter was a peaceful writer of leftist persuasion, but according to the Mossad, he was the head of Black September in Italy and had been fully engaged in planning the Munich massacre (Zvaiter's involvement in terrorism is still very controversial to this day).

The 15-man team built a detailed scheme of his movements, and then an elite team led by Mike Harari flew to Rome to make the hit.

On October 16, Zvaiter was shot sixteen times by two Israeli assassins in the lobby of the apartment building where he lived. According to David Kimche, former deputy director of the Mossad, "the goal was not so much revenge as it was to intimidate Palestinian militants. We wanted them to see behind their backs and realize that we were behind them. So, we tried to do things that weren't just killing them in the streets - that's easy... isn't it."

The next Mossad assassination took place in Paris – target: Dr. Mahmoud Hamshiri, spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization in France. According to the Mossad, he was not only involved in the planning of the Munich Massacre, but was currently organizing other attacks in Europe. To avoid endangering the lives of Hamshir's wife and child, the Mossad devised an elaborate plan involving more than 20 field officers who would precisely control how, when and where the assassination would be carried out. .

They secured details of the table where the OCL man's phone was located, and surreptitiously replaced the marble top with an identical one. Explosives were hidden inside the latter.

On December 8, 1972, after making sure that Hamshir's wife and daughter had left the apartment, a Mossad agent rang the telephone number of the OCL spokesman. Hamshiri answered and at that moment the bomb on the table exploded by remote control, killing him on the spot.

In the weeks that followed, the killers continued their campaign.

A bomb trap killed a Black September courier in Cyprus.

The shooting death of a suspected OCL bomber in Paris brought the death toll to four.

But despite the rising death toll, Western governments seemed to know nothing about what was happening right under their noses.

However, they were actually turning a blind eye to Israel's operations.

The fact that the killings were taking place in retaliation for the Munich massacre seemed to serve as sufficient justification for the Israeli allies.

In April 1973, Mossad sources in Lebanon revealed the location of three other very important targets – Abu Youssef, Kamal Nasser and Kamal Advan, very active OCL militants who were already living on the same street in Beirut. Mossad, convinced of their involvement in Black September, was already determined to kill them. But apart from the killing of the three OCL leaders, seven Lebanese policemen were also killed, the wife of one of the OCL members and a neighbor were also killed. In the following three months, Mossadi carried out four more murders: Athens, April 12, 1973: Zaid Muchassi is killed by a bomb planted under his hotel bed. Rome, April - June 1973: Abdel Hamid Shibi and Abdel Hadi Nakaa are killed by car bombs. Paris, June 28, 1973: Mohammed Boudia is killed by a car bomb.

When the Mossad compiled the list of those who planned Munich, one name kept coming to the surface - Ali Hassan Salameh, a dedicated leader of Black September.

In June 1973, the Mossad received information from a trusted source that Salameh was in Norway. A team of officers who had not had much experience in the field was quickly put together, and on July 18 they flew to Oslo and followed Salameh's trail to the sleepy northern city of Lillehammer.

They spotted what they thought was the prey they were looking for. A Middle Eastern-looking man looked a lot like the blurry newspaper photo, which was the only way they had of identifying Salameh. But this Salameh was behaving strangely – even though he was supposed to be a foreigner in Norway, he was very clear and easy going around Lillehammer.

Despite these question marks, Tel Aviv gave the green light. The killers shot the man they had identified as Salameh with 14 bullets.

But they had killed the wrong man – their victim was Ahmed Bouchiki, an innocent Moroccan waiter who had been living in Norway for five years. Descriptions of the suspicious foreigners were passed on to the authorities. Operation Lillehammer turned into the biggest disaster in Mossad history.

To make matters worse, the Mossad discovered that the initial information that had led them to Norway had been false, deliberately supplied by one of Salameh's Palestinian spies.

After this incident, Harari presented a letter of resignation, which Golda Meir did not accept. Mossad did not forget Salameh.

In January 1979, he was spotted in war-torn Beirut. Agents monitored his daily routine, and on January 19, a car bomb exploded as Salameh and his bodyguards drove by. The Red Prince was dead.

With the killing of Salameh, Israel closed the chapter of the Munich massacre. It was revenge.

The spy who ran

He started running fast. By the age of 16, Harari was already a courier for the Haganah, the Jewish paramilitary organization that fought the British and Arabs in British-ruled Palestine. And when the State of Israel was not yet born, he organized covert espionage networks in Rome, Eastern Europe and Africa, once, he has revealed, he escaped a poisoning attempt by the KGB.

He surprised everyone, including the Mossad with the "Suicide" operation and the famous blitz in Entebbe (Uganda) 1976: posing as an Italian businessman, he gave the right information to the Israeli special forces that had penetrated the Ugandan airport, freeing almost all the hostages of the Air France plane led by a Palestinian commando (the brother of the current Israeli prime minister, Netanyahu, also died during the exchange of fire).

The "Cesarea" division, which the superspy founded and led until the 1980s, still exists and operates. Even today, it undertakes the most delicate and special operations.

They are trained killers.

They shoot without much respect for the rules. "I want absolute concentration from my people and I give them all the greatest attention", was Harari's rule: "Once, I noticed that one of my agents was so busy that he even forgot his wedding anniversary. I let it work. I thought about it. I sent a gift and a big bunch of flowers to his wife, with his name on it of course. The lady never found out."
