A criminal organization, composed mainly of Albanian citizens and suspected of international drug trafficking and money laundering in several European countries, has been hit by Italian authorities as part of a wide-ranging anti-mafia operation.
Investigations have uncovered a network that allegedly trafficked cocaine between Albania, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany, while profits from criminal activity, worth millions of euros, were sent to Albania.
According to the Italian media outlet Il Giorno, the operation codenamed "Caveau 38" was carried out by the Guardia di Finanza in Lecco, under the direction of the Anti-Mafia Directorate in Milan and in collaboration with SPAK investigators in Tirana.
Investigations suspect that during the years 2019–2022, the organization trafficked around 240 kilograms of cocaine from Albania to Italy. Meanwhile, over 14 million euros of proceeds from criminal activity are suspected to have been collected and transferred to Albania.
As part of the investigation, 52 people under investigation have been identified, while six people were arrested in the act. Authorities have also seized over 1.5 million euros in cash and about 32 kilograms of narcotics, including cocaine, heroin and cannabis.
One of the key elements of the alleged criminal scheme was money laundering through the purchase of gold. According to investigators, the organization had obtained approximately eight kilograms of gold bars through a precious metals processing company, based in Milan and Alessandria.
Another company, located in the Lecco area, is suspected of serving as a kind of financial safe for the group, through investments in real estate. Both companies have been placed under preventive seizure and a judicial administrator has been appointed for them, in order to guarantee the continuity of legal activity.
To coordinate their activities, the suspected members of the organization used encrypted applications through which they communicated about drug transactions and money transfers. The transportation of narcotics and large sums of money was carried out in vehicles and trucks equipped with hidden compartments.
The investigation began after checks by the Guardia di Finanza for drug sales in public spaces in Cernusco Lombardone and Merate. However, further checks led to the discovery of an international drug trafficking and money laundering network.
SPAK investigators also participated in the operation, while cooperation between Italian and Albanian authorities helped reconstruct the movement of drugs and money between the four countries.
Operation "Caveau 38" constitutes another investigation of international proportions, focusing on Albanian citizens suspected of drug trafficking and laundering of criminal proceeds in several European countries.
