Bernardo Silva will be the new captain of the Portugal national team, taking over the armband that Cristiano Ronaldo held for more than a decade.
The decision was confirmed by coach Jorge Jesus, who announced that the midfielder will lead the team into a new chapter following the Portuguese star's retirement from international football.
Silva's appointment may come as a surprise to some fans, as another important Portuguese name, Bruno Fernandes, ranks behind him in terms of the number of matches with the national team.
However, the coach has decided that the responsibility should be entrusted to the player who has the most appearances among the current players of the national team.
Silva has 115 caps for Portugal, while Bruno Fernandes has registered 97. They are followed by Rúben Dias with 84 appearances, João Cancelo with 77 and Rúben Neves with 73. These five players will make up the team's leadership group, while the captain's responsibilities will be divided according to international experience.
Jorge Jesus announced the decision while presenting the 28-man squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. Portugal will host the Danes in Braga on November 14, before traveling to Cardiff to face Wales on November 17.
Cristiano Ronaldo ended his international career after 23 years, leaving behind an incredible record of 234 appearances and 146 goals. He led Portugal to victory at the 2016 European Championship and two editions of the Nations League.
