Edi Rama has entered the tenth year of his government and if there is a department that, more than help, has been a burden for his power, it is the Ministry of Interior.
It is enough to mention the fact that in ten years four names have been changed at the head of this ministry and the ironic fact is that the longest-lived is Saimir Tahiri, currently in prison convicted by a special court for abuse of office.
Tahiri was considered a champion minister by Edi Rama until the moment when the 'Habilaj' file exploded from across the Adriatic. The file sank the former minister, who was also accused of cannabisizing the country. If there is anything that Tahiri will be remembered for as interior minister, apart from cannabis, it was also 'Bravo Çuna', which he used to address the police forces after every attack by the opposition.
Anyway, Saimir Tahiri left and Fatmir Xhafaj took his place. This came with the CV of the former investigator of the communist regime and with the experience of leading the reform in justice, a reform more complicated than the entire Albanian transition and with increasingly contested results.
However, Fatmir Xhafajn would not be penalized in this task either by the fact that he was a former investigator of the regime, nor by the fact that he led a justice reform that so far has not instilled confidence in Albanians that the corrupt and organized crime will be punished . He would be penalized by the 'Babale' file.
The saga started with the denunciations that his brother, Geron Xhafaj, was convicted in Italy for drug trafficking. The opposition accused that despite this, Geron Xhafaj was free in Albania and was protected by his minister brother, not only to avoid prison, but also to continue drug trafficking.
Xhafaj resigned amid reports of a violent clash with Edi Rama the day he left office. He was replaced in this position by Sandër Lleshaj. Lleshaj was the general who took off his boots to become the Minister of the Interior.
