Mandatory car insurance will become more expensive in 2025. With the entry into force of the new regulation, insurance companies are required to decide on the price of the premium based on what are called risk factors.
Taking the example of a regular car with a cylinder capacity of up to 2000 cm3, which are 2-thousand engines, as they are called in everyday language, in the Tirana region with a driver over 21 years old and over two years of driving experience, as well as a vehicle over 15 years old, then the premium will result in 20,705 lek, or in other words almost 10% more expensive than a year ago.
The premium value can be up to 30% more expensive if insurance is purchased for a driver aged 18 – 21. For the same car model, the premium automatically goes to 23,811 lek.
The price of insurance increases significantly if the car will be used by businesses. With the new rules, there is a 20% increase coefficient for businesses as it is calculated that the risk is higher in cases where there are multiple users.
With the new system, insurance companies also offer price discounts. Drivers in the Dibra, Kukës and Berat districts benefit from a minimum discount of 500 lek according to the new rules.
Meanwhile, the Bonus Malus system defined under the new law on compulsory insurance, where drivers who are careful and have a good history benefit from a reduction in premium payments, has not yet been activated.
According to the regulation, this reward system will start in 2026 based on the history of 2025. For drivers who have a long accident history, the premium will be more expensive.
The Directorate of Road Transport reports that there are 914 thousand motor vehicles registered in Albania. 80.7% are cars, while 541 thousand of them, or almost 73% of them, are over 15 years old.
The new tariffs still need to be approved by the Financial Supervisory Authority, which may ask companies to review prices if it finds that the justification for the increase is not valid./ TCH
