Several railway lines of Albania have become part of the main trans-European transport network, otherwise known as TEN-T, giving it priority for investment. After the approval of the high agreement between Albania and the European Union, new maps with the train lines that are already part of this network have been published. Thus, after the railway line Durrës - Hani i Hoti, which was included earlier in the basic transport networks, the VIII railway corridor has been added, starting from the Port of Durrës, to the border with North Macedonia.

This segment has been part of the comprehensive network, but with its reclassification it will have more priority for funding from the European Union. To become part of the main network, the Albanian parliament must first approve the high-level agreement between Albania and the European Union, for indicative maps of the trans-European transport network in our country. Part of the new maps is also the Vlorë-Durrës railway line.

The agreement signed a few months ago serves as a procedure to proceed with the approval by the European Commission of the amendment of the EU regulation, for the extension of the main TEN-T network. The TEN-T Regulation identifies projects of common interest, defines priorities for the development of the trans-European transport network and specifies the requirements to be respected for the management of the infrastructure of the trans-European transport network.
