Who are the most imported products in our country for 2023?

Food products were among the 20 most imported goods in the country during the 7th month of 2023, in terms of value.

Customs collected about 8 billion ALL from food import fees in January-July of this year, as much as 10% of the total customs revenue collected in this period.

The foreign trade balance for food improved this year, but imports of some items have seen sharp increases. During the 7th month of 2023, food imports in value were 2.3 times higher than exports, while in the same period of 2022 this ratio was 2.9.

But while on an annual basis imports of cereals and sugar decreased, products such as meat, dairy, beer and processed foods saw further growth from higher demand that came as a result of positive developments in tourism.

For example, food was the fifth most imported product in terms of value this year, of which customs collected 3.4 billion lek in the form of taxes and fees.

In terms of the value of taxes paid to customs, fuels came first with about 26.2 billion ALL, or 22% of customs revenues in this period. Cigarettes are the second most imported product for about 15.4 billion ALL, or 12.6% of the total customs revenue during the 7th month of 2023.

Imports are also increasing in some food products like beer even though the country has many brewing units and factories in the country. The increase in domestic costs has made Albanian factories uncompetitive with imported products. Imports have grown rapidly in recent years, growth that continued in 2023.

The increase in meat imports is driven by the crisis that the livestock sector is going through, where the number of animals is declining rapidly, while the demand is increasing from tourism, given that traditional Albanian cuisine is based on meat.

Fruits and vegetables continue to be the most imported group in the country even though domestic production in greenhouses and the collection and processing chains have improved.
