Loan installments are not being paid on time, mainly by citizens but also by businesses. Bank of Albania figures show that at the end of August the level of problem loans increased, to the highest figure of the year. 4.19% of the total loans granted by commercial banks are classified as 'problematic' as they are not being repaid on time, while at the beginning of this figure was 4.12%.

While in comparison with the previous year, although as a percentage the number of loans, those with problems are decreasing, translated into value, it is increasing. Bad loans at the end of August were 377 million euros from 374 million euros which was the value in the same month of the previous year. The reason for the increase in bad loans, says the Bank of Albania, is the non-payment of loans on time by citizens who have taken loans in large amounts and in the Lek currency.

" The increase in the stock of non-performing loans has been observed across the entire loan portfolio, but is greater for loans in Lek, long-term loans and loans to individuals ," the financial stability report for the first half of the year states.

The main role in keeping the bad loan level low, which has fluctuated for over a year at the 4% threshold, has been the write-off of lost loans.

" Without the write-off of bad loans, which have been relatively higher during the period, the increase in the stock of problem loans would have been greater. The value of bad loans written off over the last 12 months is estimated at around 6 billion lek ," the report states, among other things.

Within a decade, the Bank of Albania says, 870 million euros in loans that had not been repaid on time over the years have been written off from the banking sector.
