Boom in the import of diamonds and precious stones

The import of natural pearls, precious stones and jewelry reached a new record in November of this year, according to the latest data from the "Institute of Statistics".

According to figures, during 2024, i.e. until November, 6.3 billion lek of natural pearls, precious stones and jewelry were imported. This figure has marked an increase of 41%, compared to the eleven months of 2023, or about 1.8 billion lek more. The figures show that throughout the months of this year, the import of natural pearls and precious stones has recorded record after record.

November of this year not only marked the highest value of 1.4 billion lek, but there is also a significant difference compared to the previous record, namely October of this same year.

Italy and Turkey account for almost 90% of the weight of imports of precious stones and pearls during the January-November period of this year.

The high increase in imports for this product in November may be due to the impact of the holidays. As is known, one of the sectors that benefits the most during the holidays is that of clothing and accessories. Albanians have a long tradition of festive clothing, and during this period, stores report a significant increase in demand for new clothing and special accessories. Personalized creations and unique accessories are particularly popular.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, as mentioned earlier, the increase in demand in certain months of the year may also be a consequence of fear of a possible devaluation of monetary assets.

But another factor seems to be the fear of holding illegal money in cash.

Precious stones are one of the easiest forms of concealing income that comes from corruption, trafficking, or other illegal sources.
