The European currency has continued to weaken this week, recording another negative record on Friday.
According to market operators, the euro is facing constant pressure due to the high amount of currency circulating in the economy, while demand for it has fallen significantly.
The surplus of foreign exchange from emigration, tourism spending that has continued into the fall, as well as the high use of the euro by businesses in this off-season period, are the main factors that experts identify as driving the decline.
"The more the exchange rate between the euro and the lek is in the euro's favor, the more in this case immigrants are forced to bring more money in euros, in order to realize the amount necessary to help their families in lek. We really have very high levels of tourists, but when they come, they come with the base currency, which is the euro," said Teuta Nunaj Kortoçi, an economic expert.
The weakening of the euro is creating pressure on savings in euros, which are losing value, while loans in this currency become more favorable for those with income in lek.
"The group that benefits are citizens who have income in lek, while they have taken out a loan in euros. This means that this citizen, when paying the monthly loan rate, will have to spend less lek. Exporting businesses are disadvantaged and importing businesses are favored by this low exchange rate because in this case they buy their product at a cheaper price ," said the expert.
Experts emphasize that the euro may remain weak as long as the market remains oversaturated with foreign exchange. In the meantime, the Bank of Albania is expected to continue monitoring the situation, but intervention is only considered if these fluctuations endanger financial stability.
