Many family and other inheritances, as well as profitable investments in modern technologies, have caused the wealth of billionaires around the world to reach record levels.

The wealth of the super-rich has grown to around 13.6 trillion euros in a year – a 13 percent increase compared to 2024, according to calculations by Swiss global bank UBS.

The bank considers cash, securities, shares in companies, real estate, and other tangible assets in its analysis.

This huge sum is spread among an ever-growing group of people. UBS now counts 2,919 billionaires, compared to 2,682 last year.

In addition, 91 people became billionaires thanks to inheritance. Men are significantly more numerous among the super-rich – 2,545 billionaires are men and 374 are women.

The number of billionaires in Germany has increased by a third, to 156.

Germany is home to more billionaires than any other European country. A quarter of them have joined the super-rich club themselves.

Billionaires in Germany have managed to increase their wealth by around 134 billion euros compared to last year, to a total of around 635 billion euros. Germany is the "richest region in Western Europe".

Germany is a leader in several industrial sectors – from pharmaceuticals to mechanical engineering to consumer goods – and offers a broad base for entrepreneurial success.

There is also a strong tradition of inheritance in Germany. This year alone, 15 members of two pharmaceutical families inherited large sums of money.

However, compared to the mainstream United States, the number of billionaires in Germany is small.

The US has 924 billionaires with a combined wealth of around €6.3 trillion.

China is in second place with 470 billionaires and a combined wealth of around 1.65 trillion euros.

The number of billionaires will continue to grow in the coming decades as wealth transfers accelerate, UBS estimates.

Estimates show that billionaires will transfer around €6.3 trillion in wealth worldwide by 2040, with at least €5.4 trillion of this amount going directly or indirectly to spouses or children.
