Business has increased the demand for loans during the last quarter of the year that we just left behind, while banks have been very careful regarding the risks that come from inflation and economic uncertainties, but they have increased their willingness to approve new loans.
The Bank of Albania has just published the Survey on lending activity for the last quarter of 2024, where it concludes that banks continue to remain cautious in assessing the risk they perceive on the macroeconomic situation in the country and its possible implications on business balance sheets.
However, the Bank of Albania emphasizes that the competitive environment in which banks operate continues to be a driving factor in meeting business loan requests from banks. In line with the expectations of a quarter ago, business credit demand was reported to be higher. The increase in the demand for credit by businesses in this quarter was broad-based, in terms of both the size of the business and the purpose of using the credit.
The demands of businesses in financing their activity, it seems, have not been restrained either by high interest rates or by the availability of high liquidity on the part of businesses. The net balance of businesses' demand for investment financing registered high values this quarter as well, under the spirit of the continuity of an expanding cycle of production capacities in the country, stimulated among other things by business confidence.
On the other hand, in the first quarter of 2024, banks expect to be more accommodating in lending policies for the expansion of investments, as well as in supporting the exercise of the activity of small and medium-sized businesses. Meanwhile, for loans to businesses in financing inventories and working capital, as well as for loans to large businesses, banks expect to follow a somewhat more conservative approach for the first quarter of 2024.
