We need a News Reporting Procedure Code!

On the morning of October 20, 2025, several online media outlets published the news that the former Prime Minister of Albania, Fatos Nano , had died.

The news was unsourced.

A few hours later, almost all media outlets reported that Nano was in serious health condition.

The source was an official announcement from the hospital where the former prime minister had been hospitalized for several days.

Three days later, political news reporters fell into the trap of comedian Delinda Disha. " Good morning friends! From today I am happy to share with you the news as an independent candidate for mayor of the Tepelena Municipality! With respect, Delinda Zhupa Disha ." This was the content of her "story" on her Instagram page.

This time, social media was not the only one. Some traditional media also published the news without any verification. Even some media in Kosovo, as is often the case in such cases, used the "copy paste" technology.

Political news reporter Esiona Konomi, addressing this case on her Facebook profile, recalls two techniques that could have been used to prevent the production of "fake news".

" Actress Disha announced her candidacy as an independent on October 23, while just a simple consultation with the Central Election Commission's social media would be enough to understand that independent candidates should have applied to the CEC by October 19, to receive signature collection forms through the Initiative Committees.

"The day the news broke in the media, the CEC published on its social networks the full list of independent candidates who had received authorization from the CEC to collect signatures from voters ," writes Konomi, drawing the attention of portals that have not yet removed or modified this false news from their sites.

Unlike the first two cases when the news was based on the status of a politician (in the case of Nano's death) and in the second case on the status of a comedian, on October 24 the most important media in Tirana hesitated to report on the news that Deputy Prime Minister Ms. Belinda Balluku had been "invited" to appear before the Special Prosecutor's Office (SPAK) on Monday, October 27, 2035.

She even had to be accompanied by a defense attorney, which meant that her procedural position was on the verge of being charged, that is, being treated as a defendant.

In this case, the news was initially published by the reporter who reports on SPAK's activities, Klodiana Lala.

Meanwhile, details about this important development were also shared with the public by the Chairman of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Gazmend Bardhi.

What unites the three cases above are not the motives that pushed the journalists to publish or not publish this news.

So, the news about the information leaflet was not included in the information bouquet of the most important television channels in Albania, depriving the public opinion of this information.

Media executives justified themselves by citing uncertainty about the veracity of the information.

The media were satisfied with a laconic response from the Special Prosecutor's Office, which said it had nothing to share with journalists. The Albanian media was brought out of this embarrassment by a journalist from the German radio Deutsche Welle, who asked the prime minister about the criminal fate of his associate.

The Prime Minister's response appears to have been an "approval" that the news about the invitation to Balluk to the Special Prosecution Office could be published.

It was enough for the journalists to ask the protagonist herself if she had received such an invitation! In the Tirana media, instead of news about Balluk's procedural position, there was news about the imaginary Albania-Switzerland train that the Deputy Prime Minister was giving from a train carriage in Switzerland.

Only after we are convinced that the news is accurate and true can we claim to clarify the most difficult questions, such as why and how?

Until then, we will produce "fake news" or "fake+news" mutations.
