Mario Brunetti

Yesterday, at the age of 92, Mario Brunetti, prominent politician and intellectual of the Italian left, died. He was born on October 20, 1932 in the Arbër village of Plataci in Calabria, where he had been living since the 19th century. XVI and the family of Antonio Gramsci, the ideologist, philosopher and historical leader of the Italian Communist Party. Arbëresh is also the one with roots in Gramsh, Albania. Mario Brunetti committed himself with flesh and soul to return to Albania this prominent figure of the labor movement, anti-fascist resistance and progressive culture, who today remains one of the most emblematic and most studied in Italy and throughout Europe. . Brunetti was among the main promoters of the figure and work of Antonio Gramsci, his fellow countryman, underlining the Albanian origin, which Gramsci himself asserts in writings and letters that are little or not known until now.

Above all, he extended this action to Albania. The city of Gramsci became the object of Mario Bruneti's annual visits. Thanks to his interest and in cooperation with the Municipality and the City Council, the bust of Antonio Gramsci stands today in the center of that city. In the many conferences organized as part of the annual activity "Gramsian Itinerary" organized and directed by him in Rome, Turin, Cozenca and also in Tirana in cooperation with the Academy of Sciences, the Mediterranean University and other scientific and cultural institutions, Brunetti has brought to the attention of the Italian and Albanian public the figure of a genius thinker, whose teachings remain current in a world like today's, gripped by a deep economic, political and moral crisis and in desperate search of solutions.

Mario Brunetti is one of the connoisseurs of the most profound interpreter of Gramscian thought. His controversies with exponents of the Italian left remain emblematic, among which the one in 2011 with the President of Italy, Giorgio Napoletano, a senior leader of the former Communist Party, caused a stir. These, according to the left-wing intellectual Brunetti, in the name of a neo-liberal transformation, had abandoned the teachings and messages of Antonio Gramsci. Brunetti saw a formidable gap between the historical leader of the Italian Communists, who was dissolved in the prisons of fascism in 1937, and his successor, Palmiro Togliatti, who, immediately after the war, threw out the proposal for the amnesty of the hierarchs of fascism, responsible for the disasters that caused to the Italian people and other peoples that Mussolini's regime conquered with fire and iron. Brunetti can be considered one of the last voices of the Italian left, which until the last day strongly denounced the aggressive and conquering nature of the fascist regime. The fascist occupation of Albania and the dignified resistance of the Albanian anti-fascists were an ever-present theme in his speeches, writings and conferences. Meanwhile, he found with despair that even in the matter of the attitude towards the fascist regime, the Italian right and left have moved towards a "consensus", which recognizes Mussolini's only sin as his intolerance towards political opponents and, somewhat, also towards Jews.

Mario Brunetti had a rich and active political life. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Italian Socialist Party, after the schism within it, leader of other left-wing formations. He was a member of the Italian Parliament for three legislatures, where he headed the Committee for the Protection of Human Rights and was a member of the Anti-Mafia Commission. He was the Secretary of the Italian delegation to the Council of Europe. The books published by him are numerous, and the titles are also full of meaning: "Revolt Square", "Actuality not current", "The Lost Left", "Yesterday and Today", "Gramshi-Man and Myth", "Courage". to be yourself", "Inside history", "Unquenchable anger", "Contribution for a strategy towards the issue of the South", etc.. Together with Prof. Alfred Uçin, one of his many friends in Albania, published the book "From one century to another". In all these editions and in countless articles published in the most popular Italian newspapers, Albania and Arbëria, Albanians and Arbëresh were a never-missing argument, even when the author's subject was narrowly Italian or European.

Becoming a spokesperson for the long-standing efforts of the Arber intellectuals, like no one before or after him, MP Mario Brunetti revealed before the Italian Parliament the cardinal issue of the Arber community, that of its legal recognition. In 1999, thanks to the persistence of this Arber personality, the Italian Parliament approved law no. 482, which granted that community the status of historical linguistic minority, opening a new page in the preservation and development of its language, culture and traditions. At the same time, Brunetti was the creator and promoter of various initiatives in favor of strengthening Italy's ties with Albania. He used his political connections and friendships to realize projects and bilateral agreements between the regions of Pulja and Calabria with the Ministry of Culture of Albania.

Together with my friends and colleagues, as with amb. Dashnor Dervish, we will remember the passionate and unattainable orator Mario Bruneti, while in the early 90's he defended the rights of Kosovo Albanians in the Italian Parliament. We will remember the virulence with which this intellectual, otherwise calm nature, denounced the serious violations of democracy by the liberticidal government of Tirana and its supporters in Italy and Europe. We will remember his efforts to come to the aid of the Albanian people, suffering and weak from the oppression of their own political class. It is a great consolation for us that we have known, that the Albanian state has recognized, in any case, the merits that the unforgettable Mario Brunetti has in the affirmation of the Arber community and in the development of relations between Albania and neighboring Italy. He has been awarded the Order "For Civil Merit" as well as the "Golden Eagle" decoration.
