The CEC Regulatory Commission has rejected by a majority vote the request to extend the diaspora registration deadline, voting 3 in favor and 2 against.
This request was submitted by the two members proposed by the opposition, Muharrem Çakaj and Helga Vukaj, who suggested that the deadline for registering immigrants be extended for another 5 days.
Their request for an extension of the deadline came at a time when many Albanians abroad had still not been able to complete their registration, raising concerns that they would miss out on the opportunity to register themselves as part of the diaspora.
However, the Regulatory Commission decided not to accept this request, maintaining the previous registration deadline in force, without the possibility of extension.
This decision has caused debate, as the opposition has expressed concern that immigrants may find it impossible to complete registration within the specified deadline, while supporters of the Regulatory Commission's decision argued that the deadlines are clear and that postponing registration could cause other organizational complications.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Party has requested an extension of the deadline only for immigrants who have applied once but had their applications rejected, in many cases due to errors in filling them out. Their number is around 42 thousand.
