Sandro Mugnai, the 53-year-old Italian who killed the 59-year-old Albanian Gëzim Dodoli on the evening of January 5 in Arrezo in Italy, has confessed how the crime happened. According to him, if he had not shot him, his house would have collapsed due to the intervention with the excavator that his Albanian neighbor was doing.

He says in an interview with the Italian media that he initially shot to prevent him, not to kill him, but he still did not stop and that he had no choice but to save the lives of his family. The 53-year-old Italian says that he feels very depressed, while he is still not clear about the actions of his Albanian neighbor. He remembers that about a month ago Gëzim Dodoli had a fight with his mother because he was playing the drums at 2 in the morning, but he adds again that the Italian greeted the Albanian.

He has just been released from prison. He speaks with difficulty, cries, despairs. Sandro Mugnai, 53, charged with manslaughter after he shot dead his neighbor Gezim Dodoli, 59, a construction contractor, who tried to demolish his house with an excavator, late on January 5 in the outskirts of Arezzo, while he was having dinner with his family.

"I am a desperate man even if I am convinced that I am innocent - he says with the help of his lawyers. 'I acted to save my family. That man was tearing down our house, we were trapped like rats. I had no choice but to shoot,' he said.

Had he ever known prison?

"Never, I have no criminal record, I am a good person, a volunteer, I like to help people. I am now in jail for four days. I was in isolation and it was a terrible experience. But not even for a moment did I think that I was guilty', he said.

You are charged with manslaughter even though the crime can be reduced to an act of self-defense. How did you spend your days in the cell?

“The probation officers were outstanding. They were trying to make me happy. I was told to calm down, not to be so desperate, that maybe I would be out soon and be able to hug my wife and children again. They were right. I thank them as much as I thank the judge who released me.

Can you tell us about those moments? Why did you shoot that man?

"I repeat, I had no choice. There were seven of us at the table to celebrate Epiphany, the night of gifts. All happy, all happy. My wife Maria Luisa, my mother Fortunata, my son Michele, my brother Massimo, his wife Maria Cristina and their son were there. At one point we hear a noise in the garden. My brother looked out the window and started screaming. "It is a madman who is destroying our cars with a bulldozer." I also looked outside and saw my neighbor trying to open a gap between parked cars. Then he attacked the house. Massimo tried to get out to stop him, but he tried to crush him and damaged the front door with the excavator bucket. He miraculously escaped."

Why didn't you leave?

"It was not possible. Dodoli had partially destroyed the door blocking it, the only way out. I yelled at him to leave, but he didn't stop. It was a real nightmare. The house was shaking because the roof was beginning to collapse. Everyone screamed in terror. I took the rifle, I thought maybe I could scare him, make him think. And instead...".

And instead?

“He kept hitting the house. I shot the first warning shot to the ground, but he didn't stop. The windows of the house moved, the rubble fell. My family members were screaming in despair. I shot again."

How many shots?

"I think three, maybe four. I aimed a bit hoping to hurt his legs. Suddenly the bulldozer stopped. I saved my family's life and my life. But at a very high price. I still cry for that man, but I repeat: there was no other option".

The investigating judge wrote that he "definitely acted to protect the lives of family members and not property".

"Yes, and I thank him again, but the pain and despair remain."

How do you explain your neighbor's behavior?

"I do not know. A month ago there was a fight with my mother because he was playing the drums at 2 in the morning. Nothing else, but I greeted him again.
