The Union of Albanian Journalists reacts harshly to the Police, after the arrest

The Albanian Journalists' Union has denounced the behavior of the State Police during today's protest, emphasizing that journalists and media operators have been prevented from carrying out their duties, being attacked with water cannons and tear gas, and being escorted to the police station without public explanation.

The case of journalist Vjolanda Peca, held for more than two hours in detention, is presented as a clear example of the violation of media rights and the infringement of freedom of expression.

The Union of Albanian Journalists demands accountability from the Police authorities and the Ministry of Interior, announcing that it will prepare reports for international organizations that monitor fundamental freedoms.

The response states that if these acts are repeated, the journalist community will react with protests and solidarity, turning the issue into a broader cause for the protection of media freedom and human rights.

Statement by the Union of Albanian Journalists

Escorting journalists to the police and attacking them with water cannons and tear gas is a punishable act.

Tirana on 23.07.2026

The Union of Albanian Journalists denounces the violence and aggressiveness of the State Police witnessed today in front of the Albanian Parliament, not only towards honest citizens, but especially towards journalists, employees and identified media outlets.

The State Police repeatedly blocks the entry of journalists and cameramen during parliamentary sessions, violating the regulations of the high constitutional institution.

During today's protest episodes, the State Police attacked reporters and operators with water cannons and made their normal reporting process impossible, especially during live broadcasts.

Images published by the media and online networks, when journalists on duty are attacked with water cannons and tear gas, constitute evidence of the harsh behavior of the Police towards journalists on duty.

Accompanying the reporter of the media organization Citizens.al, Vjolanda Peca, to the Police Station and keeping her under conditions of restriction of freedom for more than two hours, without a public explanation, constitutes a violation and an act of violation and obstruction of the journalist.

The journalist was taken by force while on duty.

The Union of Albanian Journalists has received several complaints today from colleagues and media operators who have not only been attacked by water cannons and tear gas, but have also faced delays, physical obstacles to being in the positions specified by Parliament regulations, and their professional equipment has been damaged.

The UGSH appeals to the authority of the General Director of the State Police and the Minister of Interior to hold accountable all persons in uniform who dare to repeat such acts and behaviors towards journalists.

Our organization informs these authorities that an evidentiary report is being prepared for all cases, which will be made available to partners, organizations and institutions that monitor fundamental freedoms and especially media freedom in our country.

The lack of reactions and especially the lack of public explanations from the State Police regarding such cases and the escorting of journalist Peca, constitutes a compromising silence. For this reason, we warn the head of this institution, the General Director, Mr. Hita, that in the event of a recurrence of such episodes, he will face a solidarity reaction of protests and not only from our professional community and networks of organizations that contribute to freedom of expression and the media in our country and beyond.
