The researcher Ilir Ikonomi inaugurated today in Tirana the biographical book "Apostulli", dedicated to the cleric, writer and politician Theofan Stilian Noli, a prominent personality of Albania and the Albanian-American community from the beginning of the last century.
In the first volume of this study, the author brings a bunch of unknown facts about Noli's life in the United States of America in the years 1906-1920, about his patriotic, cultural and journalistic activity.
The life of the prominent cleric and activist Fan Noli is reconstructed in the book "Apostulli" by the well-known researcher and former journalist of the Voice of America, Ilir Ikonomi. The first volume of the biographical study, just published by the European University of Tirana, covers Noli's life and activities in the United States, from his arrival in America in 1906 until 1920, when he left for Albania.
The author brings in the book a lot of new data, which completely completes the figure and activity of Noli in Boston at the beginning of the 20th century, discovered in the Central Archives of Albania, the National Archives of the USA, the Archives of the Austrian Foreign Ministry as well as in some other document sources. The Economist researcher says that Noli has always attracted him for his courage in starting big things, as he broke the framework and opened new paths.
"Noli has been a beloved figure for people, because he was very knowledgeable, he led the Albanians in America, he founded an important Albanian newspaper in America, he waged a war for the annexation of Albanian lands at the Peace Conference in Paris in 1919-20 , this is a very big thing, and it enlightened the Albanians", says Mr. Ikonomi.
The researchers believe that thanks to the many archival sources, the study provides a complete and multidimensional portrait of Fan Noli. The well-known historian Bernd Fischer emphasizes in the preface of the book that the author Ikonomi brings important facts and details and describes in this new biography the national activity of Noli with vivid colors and a special style.
While the historian Nevila Nika said at the book inauguration ceremony, that for historical figures like Noli, the Albanian society always needs and space for new research and reflections, due to the wide activity and difficult times to document important episodes of life his.
"Ilir Ikonomi brings in every publication beautiful subjects, facts that we did not know, new perspectives, about which not all of us here in the hall and those outside agree. For a prominent character like Noli, it is important to have a public debate on the values of his events, work and example", said Mrs. Nika.
A lot has been written about Fan Noli's life, but some biographers, especially during the communist regime, says the author Ikonomi, considered him as an irreproachable person and have only written numerous praises, hiding and distorting the truth.
Even today, he adds, there is a reluctance that Noli's figure can be obscured by bringing out all the facts, while in this book Noli is real and unfiltered.
"He was not just a cleric. He used the Albanian church, which he created himself and where mass and the holy word were given in Albanian, for the Albanian cause. This brought him the love of the people. In the church of Noli, not only Orthodox believers came, but also Muslim Albanians, because there they talked about the Motherland, about patriotism, about the future of their country. It was the year 1908 when Noli opened the Albanian church and people wanted to learn from Noli how the fate of Albania would go with autonomy or independence, how it should be governed and strengthened", said Mr. Ikonomi.
Fan Noli is one of the important figures in the history of Albania. He arrived in the US from Egypt in 1906, when he was 24 years old, where he began his national activism.
Noli created the Albanian Orthodox Church, helped unite Albanian immigrants around the national issue, used journalism to unfold the national platform for independence from the Ottoman Empire and self-government.
Noli translated into Albanian the Bible, liturgies and religious masses, as well as some of the best authors of world literature.
With the biographical study "Apostulli" dedicated to Fan Noli, the author Ilir Ikonomi further completes his gallery of monographs dedicated to prominent figures in the history of Albania, Ismail Qemali, Esad Toptani and Faik Konica./ VOA
