The Prosecutor's Office of Elbasan has started investigations after the large pollution caused by the fire that fell in a collection point in the former Metallurgical Plant in Elbasan.

The fire that continued for more than 20 hours engulfed the scrap yard of the Kurum factory, burning plastics, car batteries and other toxic materials, releasing dangerous gases that covered the entire city.

An investigative group consisting of two prosecutors and three judicial police officers will now investigate the criminal offense of "air, water and land pollution".

The Head of Prosecution at the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction Elbasan, has started the investigations mainly, registering criminal proceedings no. 1309, dated 07.11.2023 for the criminal offense "Air, water and land pollution" provided for by Article 201 of the Criminal Code, after it became known about the event of 06.11.2023 where in a massif with scrap in the interior of the former Elbasan Metallurgical Plant, currently administered by the "Kurum" company, there was a large-scale fire that caused great pollution in the environment of the surrounding areas and beyond in the Elbasan Municipality.

For the investigation of this criminal proceeding, an investigative group consisting of two prosecutors and three officers of the judicial police of the Prosecution at the Court of First Instance of the General Jurisdiction of Elbasan, who in cooperation with the services of the State Police, have carried out the actions before the investigation in the framework of the above-mentioned criminal proceedings, in order to clarify the causes of the incident.
