Ozempic , the anti-diabetes medication that has become a global trend because it helps with weight loss, can cause vision damage.

A recent study, according to Bloomberg magazine, shows that people who use it are likely to be diagnosed with a rare disease that causes vision loss in one eye.

Some patients who had used Ozempic and who underwent the study reported having a dark area, or a shadow in their vision affecting the upper or lower half of their visual field.

Ozempic is also used in Albania, although it is not sold in pharmacies. Doctors say there is a high demand from people who want to lose weight.

"There are a group of patients who have diabetes and want us to include it in the treatment scheme after they have seen and heard from others about this effect/benefit that this medication has for weight loss," says endocrinologist Edlira Hoxha.

Ozempic is suspected of causing other side effects besides vision damage.

"We don't recommend it in obese patients because of the side effects. There are also more serious side effects, which are pancreatitis and there is a significant risk of thyroid cancer."

However, Bloomberg says that in the United States, although Ozempic has not been approved by the US Drug Agency, it is being used widely and has contributed to reducing the obesity epidemic.

In 2023, the rate fell from 44.1 to 43.96 percent, which, while a slight decrease, researchers consider to be very significant.
