Her election campaign caused a stir beyond the borders of the canton. Majlinda Sulejmani (33 years old), nurse at the hospital in Wil and local president of the center of Saint Margreten, wanted to transfer to the municipal council.
In advance, she received a lot of criticism and was even attacked. But she was not afraid and hoped to be able to change something politically. However, it did not succeed.
Sulejmani received 338 votes last Sunday. Too little for victory. She would need at least 482 votes. Now an SVP politician will take Sulejmani's place in the recently vacated seat in the municipal council.
"I am very disappointed with my performance," says Sulejmani about "St. Galler Tagblatt". For the politician, it is already the second loss in the local council elections. She applied for a seat on the City Council in 2020, but fell behind even then.
She works as a cashier for the village newspaper "Mosaik" and is the vice president on the board of FC St. Margaret. All this on top of her full-time job as a nurse and mother. However, her efforts have not yielded results.
"I am very sorry that my commitment is not appreciated," said the 33-year-old.
During her campaign, Sulejmani seems to have been an eye-catcher for the elderly in the area, perhaps because of her Albanian background.
As a single working mother, she had little time for stressful politics. A concerned elderly woman (80) even wrote to her by email. As the election approached, one of their campaign posters was destroyed and an ax left next to it. He even said that there were people who received him anonymously on his home phone.
However, Suleiman was not discouraged by any of these events. Despite the hostilities, the 33-year-old ran a dedicated campaign, but had no luck.
