"Screaming historical untruths." This is how journalist Blendi Fevziu considers the statement of British archaeologist Richard Hodges regarding Albania and Butrint in the video where he gives a lecture at the University of Siena, Italy.
Archaeologist Richard Hodges is also a member of Butrint's management board, and the video has sparked many reactions.
He declares that: "Albania is an Artificial Nation created by the Great Powers without the presence of the Albanians themselves in 1913", "the area around Butrint for a while was Epirus" and that "as a consequence of the inclusion of Butrinit and the surrounding area in the state Albanians, many Greeks fled to Corfu and areas in the South".
Fevziu wrote that the Great Powers recognized the Independence of Albania and that none of the aggressive states have denied the Albanian nation. He further adds that there has never been ethnic cleansing of the Greek population from Albania.
Blendi Fevzi's full post:
A few days ago, Auron Tare published a video, where Richard Hodges, British archaeologist and member of the management board of Butrint, gives a lecture at the University of Siena in Italy, where he talks about Butrint and the surrounding area. What makes an impression is that Mr. Hodges has fundamental mistakes in the facts. Interpretation is of little importance, but facts are facts.
First, he declares that Albania is "an Artificial Nation created by the Great Powers without the presence of the Albanians themselves in 1913".
This fact is completely untrue. Albania was not and has never been an artificial state created for the balance of great powers. Albanians demanded their independence in 1878 at the Congress of Berlin. They set up a national government that functioned for almost 2 years from the League of Prizren, which represented all the provinces inhabited by Albanians and was led by Ymer Prizren. It set up genuine state structures and was suppressed at the insistence of the Great Powers, even with the largest fleet of the time that arrived at the shores of Ulcinj to frighten the local defenders of the city.
Me 1913 i kaloi shtetit Shqiptar.
This is a screaming historical untruth. Never in the history of Albania and Greece has there been ethnic Albanian cleansing against the Greek population. The Albanians have never pushed the Greek population to leave their homes and properties. The opposite has happened in some moments of history, such as in 1913 - 1914 or 1944. The Greek monirotars remained in their properties even after the declaration of independence of Albania and even remain today. Maybe there are cases of families that have moved from one city to another, but mass displacement of the Greek population from the areas that are now part of the territory of the Republic of Albania has never happened.
For all three of these, I am also posting the subtitled video so that you can hear for yourself the statements made by Hodges, who until today I considered a serious researcher.
