"Welcome to Albania, this is the paradise of Italian retirees". This is how the Italian daily Tgcom24 begins its article dedicated to Italian pensioners who have chosen our country to spend their old age.

The journalist of the show "È semper Cartabianca" made a trip to Durrës to meet with a group of compatriots who have chosen to change their country and move to the coastal city after retirement.

"There is a bilateral convention between the two nations, according to which Italy, moving the residence here and staying more than six months a year, is obliged to give him a gross pension" - confesses a pensioner, underlining that he is now able to benefit from 1,500 euros per month instead of 1,150 that was before without being taxed.

"Making some calculations, here we can save up to 25 thousand euros per year", adds another pensioner, who settled with her husband. In Italy, if we manage to save five thousand, it was a miracle," he adds.

According to the stories of Italian retirees, it is not only the wallet that improves, but also the quality of life. In Albania, in fact, the cost of goods and services is much lower, so it is possible to enjoy some other meals: aperitifs, SPA, dance lessons and restaurant dinners. "A plate of spaghetti with seafood costs 7.5 euros, a wonderful plate of fried seafood costs less than ten," explains Isabella Ruggeri, who works at an agency dealing with transfers abroad. "Since the pandemic, about two thousand pensioners have arrived here", she confesses.
