The President is re-elected in Ecuador, PROMISE during the campaign: We will
Daniel Noboa

Incumbent President Daniel Noboa was declared the winner of Ecuador 's presidential race on Sunday, taking 55.8% of the vote. Representing the National Democratic Action party, Noboa received 16,746 votes ahead of his rival in the first round in February.

The President of the National Electoral Council, Diana Atamaint, said that with more than 90% of votes counted, they showed an "irreversible trend" in favor of Noboa.

His leftist rival Luisa Gonzalez secured 44% of the vote according to figures released by Ecuador's National Electoral Council.

Gonzalez told cheering supporters that he would demand a recount, calling it "the worst and most grotesque electoral fraud in Ecuador's history."

More than 13 million people are eligible to vote, which is mandatory for adults up to the age of 65. Failure to vote results in a $46 fine.

Noboa, 37, is the heir to a billion-dollar fortune, while Gonzalez, 47, of the Citizens' Revolution party, is a lawyer and former lawmaker.

In January 2024, Noboa said that Ecuador was in a state of “internal armed conflict,” which allowed him to deploy thousands of soldiers on the streets to fight gangs.

People were charged with terrorism for any suspected links to organized crime groups.

Voters are mainly concerned about violence and rising crime linked to the trafficking of cocaine produced in neighboring Colombia and Peru.

Both candidates have promised tough anti-crime policies, better law enforcement equipment, and international assistance to combat drug cartels and local criminal groups.

Murders, arms smuggling, fuel theft, extortion and other crimes committed by local criminal groups linked to Mexican cartels and the Albanian mafia have increased significantly as the economy struggles to recover from the pandemic.
