The Union of Albanian Journalists has reacted to Prime Minister Edi Rama's announcement to close the Albanian Public Radio Television.
UGSH says it will come out on Monday with an official stance on the Prime Minister's project or proposal, being categorically against the closure of public media in the Republic of Albania.
Meanwhile, UGSh has also published a petition by RTSH employees asking politics to restore the real autonomy of the Albanian public media and in this way, rebuild this institution from within.
Petition of RTSH employees:
For Real Autonomy and Free Elections in RTSH
We, employees, media professionals and citizens concerned about the future of Albanian Radio Television (RTSH), address public opinion and responsible institutions with this petition, to demand the restoration of the real autonomy of Albanian public media.
The problem
RTSH, according to its Statute and law, is an independent public body. In practice, for more than 30 years, this institution has been subject to continuous political interference, mainly through nominal and chain appointments from politics.
Parliament and successive majorities:
appoint the Director General,
appoint the members of the Governing Council,
directly influence the appointment of directors and other management structures.
This model has produced an ARTSH:
nor independent,
nor competitive,
neither professional,
and often used as a political instrument.
When this system fails, responsibility is unfairly placed on employees, journalists, and technical staff, who work every day in difficult conditions, without professional security, and under constant pressure.
Concrete examples
There are numerous cases where key leadership positions have been filled:
without professional criteria,
without media experience,
only through phone calls or political decisions,
severely damaging the quality of television production and public trust.
Our requests
We are looking for:
Free and transparent elections for the governing bodies of RTSH, with real participation of the staff and the professional community.
Removing politics from direct appointments to the RTSH management structures.
Real editorial and managerial autonomy, guaranteed by law and control mechanisms.
Meritocracy and professionalism in every appointment and promotion.
Public accountability of RTSH leaders to staff and citizens.
Institutional protection for employees who reject censorship and political pressure.
Purpose
This petition is not against individuals, but against a failed model that has kept RTSH in hibernation for decades. We believe that RTSH can and should be transformed into a European public media, independent and at the service of citizens.
Before RTSH is attacked or used as a political justification, give us the opportunity to rebuild this institution ourselves from within.
