SPAK prosecutor Doloreza Musabelliu has uncovered a money laundering scheme by criminal groups in Albania.
In an interview for 'Kallxo Përnime', Musabelliu revealed details about the 'war' against money laundering, stating that the income derived from criminal activity is mostly invested in the construction sector and recently in the cryptocurrency market.
"Investigations by the Special Prosecution Office have shown that a significant portion of the proceeds from illegal criminal activities have been invested or injected into the construction sector, in various businesses, in commercial entities, in bank accounts of commercial entities or third parties, relatives of the suspects, and recently the use of cryptocurrency markets has been found to launder the proceeds of crime. Most of this money comes from drug trafficking, corruption, human smuggling, and cybercrime, a wide range of criminal offenses that generate money that is then laundered. In the years 2022-2024, we have a fourfold increase in the seizure of commercial entities. If in 2010 we had forty commercial entities seized, in 2024 we have 44 entities," said Musabelliu.
The SPAK prosecutor also showed where the money comes from and is then used to launder it.
According to her, in recent years the number of seizures of assets suspected of being derived from money laundering has increased.
Musabelliu says that most of this money comes from drug trafficking and corruption. The prosecutor added that the investigations have found about 16 criminal groups that launder money inside and outside Albania and that over the past 5 years, the total value of assets seized and confiscated reached 182 million euros.
"Most of this money comes from drug trafficking, from corruption, from human smuggling, from cybercrimes, it is a wide range of criminal acts that generate money which is then laundered. For a five-year period, from our statistics, the total value of seized and confiscated assets reached 182 million euros," emphasized Doloreza Musabelliu.
