
A day after the arrest of Moisi Habilaj in Borsh, the State Police has revealed new details about the operation, announcing that the 48-year-old was arrested with the aim of extradition to Italy, where he has been convicted of participating in an armed criminal organization for the purpose of drug trafficking.
According to the police, Habilaj was located in a bar in Borsh during the operation codenamed "Methods", conducted by the Vlora Local Police Directorate in cooperation with the Special Operational Force Directorate.
Authorities report that he has been sentenced by the Court of Catania to 12 years, 2 months and 13 days in prison for the criminal offense of "Participation in an armed criminal organization for the purpose of drug trafficking."
The police also announce that the security measure "Arrest in prison" has been executed against Habilaj, imposed by the Serious Crimes Court with decision no. 192 of December 26, 2018, for the criminal offenses "Production and sale of narcotics", "Trafficking in narcotics", committed in collaboration in the form of a structured criminal group, as well as "Structured criminal group".
During the operation, 46-year-old Eduard Ahmeti, a resident of Saranda, was also arrested in flagrante delicto, while a 70-year-old Italian man with the initials SF, 70 years old, was prosecuted at large for the criminal offense of "Supporting the perpetrator of a crime."
Habilaj's arrest was made public on Friday evening. He was located at a beach bar in Borsh, owned by his family.
According to the same sources, at the time of his arrest he was wearing a hat and had grown a beard, in an attempt to avoid identification.
Moisi Habilaj is one of the most well-known names in the drug trafficking case between Albania and Italy. In 2021, the Court of Appeal of Catania finally sentenced him to 15 years and 5 months in prison. Earlier, he had left the apartment he had declared in Ragusa and was on the run.
In Albania, Habilaj was found guilty of drug trafficking in four episodes between 2013 and 2017. He was sentenced by the Special Court to 15 years in prison, a sentence that was reduced to 10 years due to a summary trial. His name was also mentioned in the investigations of the Italian authorities that were later used in the criminal proceedings against the former Minister of the Interior, Saimir Tahiri.

Following the intensive investigative and operational work to locate and arrest wanted persons, based on the information provided and the use of special investigative methods to detect and locate a person highly wanted by the Italian authorities, within the framework of the police operation codenamed "Methods", it became possible to locate in a bar in Borsh, capture and provisionally arrest citizen Moisi Habilaj, 48 years old, resident of Babicë e Vogël, Vlorë.
This citizen has been sentenced by the Court of Catania, Italy, to 12 years, 2 months and 13 days in prison for the criminal offense of "Participation in an armed criminal organization with the aim of trafficking narcotics."
Also, the security measure "Arrest in prison" was executed against him, determined by decision no. 192, dated 26.12.2018, of the Serious Crimes Court, for the criminal offenses "Production and sale of narcotics", "Trafficking in narcotics", committed in collaboration in the form of a structured criminal group, as well as "Structured criminal group".
During the operation, citizen EA, 46 years old, resident of Saranda, was arrested in flagrante delicto, and Italian citizen SF, 70 years old, was prosecuted at large for the criminal offense of "Supporting the perpetrator of the crime".
The procedural materials were referred to the Prosecutor's Office for further action ."
