The Portuguese government is investigating the murder of a Portuguese tourist in Albania. The 20-year-old was found in the early hours of Tuesday morning with stab wounds.

In a statement to Renascença, Raquel Trindade, from the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that there is no official information about what happened, or about the actions that the Tirana authorities may have taken.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following the case of this Portuguese citizen who passed away in Albania and, through its Embassy in Rome, as well as the honorary consulate in Tirana, we are following the matter together with the local authorities," the official stated.

She confirmed to Renascença that, "at the moment", it is still not known exactly what happened.

"We know from local media that there have been arrests, but at the moment we still do not have information through our network that we can pass on to them," added Raquel Trindade.

She assured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will "continue to follow up on everything that is necessary, both with local authorities and with family members."

According to Albanian media, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the murder of the young Portuguese man.

The main suspect in the stabbing is a 29-year-old man, Sokrat Vata, who has a criminal record in the United Kingdom for offenses related to drug trafficking, possession of weapons and dangerous driving.
