The court hearing to determine security measures against three suspects in the case of the missing 69 million lek in the Albanian Post branch in Durrës was accompanied by strong debates between the prosecution and the defense.

According to the prosecution, the monetary amount was withdrawn from the central cash register during the months of April and May through accounting operations carried out in violation of procedures, without being recorded as an entry in the Shijak and Kruja branches.

The prosecution also raised suspicions about the use of forged payment orders, accusing the former director of the branch, Elisabeta Mataj, of embezzling the amount.

One of the elements presented by the indictment was the frequenting of casinos by Mataj and her husband. According to the prosecution, the former director appears to have entered the casino 340 times, including during the period when the funds are suspected to have disappeared.

For this purpose, video footage of the entrances and exits of two casinos in Tirana was also administered. The defense considered this evidence as an invasion of privacy and argued that frequenting casinos is unrelated to the criminal case.

Mataj's lawyers requested a lighter security measure, emphasizing that she is a mother of six children and does not pose a risk of evading justice.

They also disputed the claim that she had left the country to avoid investigation, clarifying that entry into Albania was made through Morina, a border point that is not reflected in the TIMS system according to agreements with Kosovo.

The defense also presented documents that, according to the lawyers, prove that Mataj had been signaling irregularities in the financial sector for months, had requested controls and disciplinary measures against the responsible employees, and had continuously informed the General Directorate of the Post Office.

On the other hand, former chief finance officer Valbona Duni stated that funds were taken from her office by the director and were not returned, while treasurer Paola Dana denied having received any money, stating that every action in the branch was carried out only by order of the director.

At the end of the session, the court imposed the measure of "prison arrest" on Elisabeta Mataj, while against Valbona Duni and Paola Dana it imposed the measure of "house arrest".

Three criminal charges have been filed for the incident: one by the Albanian Post against the three, one by Valbona Duni against Elisabeta Mataj, and one by Mataj herself against Duni and Dana. The prosecution is expected to merge them into a single investigative proceeding.
