The director of cybercrime in the State Police, Ervina Gjana, gave the details in a press conference after the police operation, coded "USDT-1".
She informed that the police have executed the "prison arrest" security measures given by the Court of Tirana for 18 people.
They are accused of several criminal offences, from unlicensed exercise of financial activities, concealment of income and failure to report a crime.
Meanwhile, 2 people from North Macedonia have been declared wanted.
Gjana clarified that the 18 arrested, in the roles of authors and administrators of economic entities in Tirana and Shkodër, exchanged virtual currencies for cash and vice versa, without being equipped with the necessary license.
Investigations are ongoing, as the police have concluded that cryptocurrencies were used as a payment mechanism between criminal groups.
"In coordination with the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana, investigations are continuing to bring to justice all citizens implicated in this criminal activity, who have used cryptocurrencies as a payment mechanism between criminal groups," said Gjana.
As a result of checks in 32 different premises, around 750 thousand euros were seized, money that, according to the police, was suspected of serving this criminal activity. Also, 13 computer devices and 27 mobile phones were seized.
