Ohrid and Struga lose tourist race with Albania

Next summer Ohrid and Struga will face a lack of accommodation facilities, the tourism sector warns. Because of this situation, groups of tourists in Albania come to Ohrid only for one-day walks, although until only two years ago the situation was the opposite.

"At the moment in Albania, many hotels and facilities are being built and tourism is booming. Every day we witness dozens of buses arriving for one day. We have to fill up like Albania, but unfortunately we don't have as many capacities, for the next season we are facing a lack of accommodation capacities," said Jakim Malenko, owner of the tourist agency.

Hoteliers hope that the state and UNESCO will find a way and compromise to enable further development of tourism in Ohrid, respecting cultural, natural and economic interests.

They request from the Hotel Association the adoption of detailed urban plans for all 65 kilometers of the lake shore.

"There is a detailed plan for less than 10 percent and how should we make progress? What enables that? It enables construction without permits," said Krste Blažeski – president of HOTAM.

Hoteliers complain that for lack of such urban plans, the opportunity to apply for money from European funds for investments in tourist facilities is failing.
