'I was not aware of the fine'/ Diana, the mother who was sentenced for

25-year-old Diana Bahçja was arrested by the police, separating her from her 8-day-old son, after the court of first instance in Tirana imposed a fine in 2020 of 2 million and 500 thousand old lek, converting a weeks ago, to 50 days in jail.

She has been convicted of abandoning a child from her first marriage, but she denies having done so. In a telephone connection from prison to Euronews, Bahçja indicated that he did not know about the fine. She said that she is burdened by the separation from the baby, while she affirmed that she is in good health.

"I don't know, I expect to be released from today, but now I know. I was not aware of any kind of thing, neither fine, nor imprisonment, nothing. First they took me for a statement, then they informed me of the prison sentence", said the 25-year-old.

Naim Bahçja from the village of Drisht i Postribe in Shkodër has been taking care of his newborn child for a week.
