Former Director General of Prisons Agim Ismaili appeared this Tuesday, December 23, at the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), where he remained for almost two hours. He is under investigation in connection with the cyber attack that occurred on March 12 against the SPAK's IT system.
Media reports say that Agim Ismail has been officially informed of the closure of the investigation. The same procedure was previously communicated to two other people arrested in this case: former employee of the Inspectorate of Territorial Protection, Arnold Rrokaj, and former official of the Vlora prison, Zambak Gjoni.
SPAK's investigations show that the individuals involved are suspected of attempting to hack into the computers of three special prosecutors, Behar Dibra, Enkeleida Millonai and Elida Kaçkini, with the aim of obtaining sensitive data. According to the Special Prosecution, the attempt to penetrate the internal IT system failed and the hackers were unable to access the institution's main databases.
However, SPAK explains that the arrested were able to obtain some partial data, which was then allegedly distributed to other people. This circle includes two journalists, as well as Agim Ismaili, the former head of prisons, and Dritan Palnikaj, Secretary General at the Ministry of Agriculture.
The investigations have focused on the specific role of each person, the manner in which the information was obtained and the purpose of its use. SPAK assesses that the case constitutes a serious event aimed at undermining the security of justice institutions and has emphasized that the protection of information systems and the independence of prosecutors remains a priority.
