The Protest Coordination and Management Group has addressed the European Union Delegation to Albania and a number of European and international institutions with a request to send independent observers to future protests.
The group calls for internationals to closely monitor the protests, document developments on the ground, and verify the treatment of protesters by Albanian authorities.
The request has been addressed to the EU Delegation to Albania, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the OSCE Presence in Albania, the OSCE/ODIHR, the Council of Europe, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as diplomatic missions accredited in Albania.
In the document, the group argues that the protests, which began at the end of May, have maintained a civic and peaceful character, while expressing concern about the way the authorities have reacted to the protesters.
The coordinating group raises allegations of the use of force, tear gas, pepper spray and pressurized water during protests in front of the Albanian Parliament.
The petitioners also claim that in some cases the use of tear gas was not preceded by public warnings and that there have been reported cases of the use of force during the arrest and transportation of protesters.
Another concern raised in the document relates to vulnerable people. According to the group, people with health problems, young people, the elderly and people with disabilities have also been affected during police interventions.
Through this communication, the group requests that international institutions send independent observers to future protests, in order to document developments on the ground and verify allegations of disproportionate use of force, escorts, prosecutions, and intimidation of protesters.
The document states that the request for international intervention comes after, according to the group, the lack of an effective response from Albanian institutions to concerns raised earlier.
The group also calls for the establishment of a stable channel of communication with international mechanisms and independent observation of the protests, considering their presence an additional guarantee for the objective documentation of the situation and respect for the rights of protesters.
