International pressure for the election of the new head of SPAK? The chairwoman
Mirela Bogdani

The High Prosecutorial Council denies that there was pressure in the selection of the new head of SPAK.

During the report to the Assembly on the activities of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime, Chair Mirela Bogdani explained the stage of the competition to lead the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime, as well as the role of the Council in studying the candidates.

"Regarding the head of SPAK, today was the meeting where we approved the formal conditions and criteria. This procedure was formal but necessary. We will continue with the verification of the files, analysis for each one and then the voting process. Regarding the issue of pressure. It is more lobbying, someone is a fan of an approach that a prosecutor follows. One may have a more repressive approach, someone a little more humane and liberal. They are all SPAK prosecutors ," she said.

Even the allusions to international interference, Bogdani rejected the preferences and revealed the messages.

"The diplomats were asked to guarantee the process. There is no suggestion of any kind. The only suggestion was that if you have any threats, refer to them, absolutely not a specific name," she said.

On Monday morning, the High Prosecutorial Council approved the list of 4 aspirants who will compete to succeed Altin Dumani. After reviewing the files of Adnan Xholi, Klodian Braho, Doloreza Musabelliu, Ervin Gogaj, they will face a public interview and then whoever receives the most votes will be declared the winner, to take office on December 19.

"SPAK does not have a repressive approach," Bogdani explained.

Part of the discussion in the Laws Committee was also the murder of a judge in the Court of Appeals. For the KLP chairwoman, this case should be even more encouraging to increase security in justice institutions. Therefore, she called for inter-institutional cooperation.

"We are planning a meeting with the prosecutors of Albania, perhaps it is time for the justice institutions to unite and take measures for both infrastructure and security. Also, the executive should cover the financial costs ," she said.

Mirela Bogdani also commented on the arrest of lawyer Ulian Barjami in Elbasan after a clash with the prosecutor, but did not clarify the KLP's position on this issue.

"Regarding the lawyer arrested in Elbasan, we had a meeting today and discussed it informally, we decided to first seek information and then clarify our position. We cannot express ourselves without having full information about how the events unfolded ," Bogdani said.

Importantly, the KLP also appreciates the increase in the number of prosecutors to resolve the impasse with stock files, where they have reached out to the EU for assistance to conduct a detailed expertise on the need for population numbers in Albania./ TCH
