The mystery of the "suicide" of the Albanian immigrant in Britain, the
Leonard Farruku

New details have emerged from the investigation into the death of a young Albanian man on the British ship “Bibby Stockholm” adapted for holding illegal immigrants. According to an investigation cited by “The Independent”, he had not raised any complaints or concerns about the conditions on board, writes the AP news agency.

Leonard Farruku was found unconscious in a shower cubicle on board the ship docked at Portland Port, Dorset, on December 12, 2023.

An investigation by authorities in Bournemouth carried out a post-mortem examination and found that the 27-year-old died as a result of strangulation.

His sisters, Marsida Keci and Jola Dushku, have questioned how their brother, who they say has had mental health problems since the death of his parents, was allowed to be transferred to the ship "Bibby Stockholm".

Coroner Rachael Griffin stated: “There is no evidence that Leonard was subject to racism or inappropriate acts and there is no evidence that he ever raised any complaints or concerns about the conditions on the boat to those on the boat or to anyone else, which is quite in contrast to what happened.”

Migrant Yusuf Kargbo, who arrived in the UK in July 2022, told the hearing that he was transferred to the Bibby Stockholm ship in November 2023, where he was placed in a room with Farruk, adding that "everything was upside down" when he arrived in the room.

He said the young Albanian was a "quiet person" and added: "He just smiled and went about his business."

Kargbo added that he did not know Farruk's name and only knew that he was from Albania.

He said Farruk had no friends on the boat and would sit in the dining room looking at his phone, and added that he also laughed at the videos on the bed where he would put a sheet over himself to give himself some privacy.

Kargbo said he had not seen any unusual behavior from Farruk and added: “I never had any concerns about him because he always had this smiling face.”

He added that he had not seen Farruk hitting the walls of their room or displaying any “other bad behavior.” He said that on December 11, Farruk returned to the room around 6 p.m. and then went to take a shower.

Kargbo said he did not see him again that evening and the next morning, when he woke up and discovered that Farruk had not slept in his bed, he raised the alarm with security staff.

The investigation revealed that security guards found the Albanian immigrant in the shower and unsuccessfully attempted to provide him with first aid. Levana Coker, who worked as a flight attendant at Bibby Stockholm, told the hearing that she had been informally advised to “stay away” from a resident who was behaving unusually.

“Our manager said there was a person who was acting strange and unusual. He was laughing and crying, walking around, talking to himself, and we should all stay away,” she said. Coker added that the person had not been identified and added that she had “assumed” the manager was referring to Farruk after his death.

Isabella Basstone, a receptionist at Bibby Stockholm, served Farruk when he arrived on the boat. "I remember him being very smiling and looking very lively and sweet. I just remember him being very friendly and happy," she said.

The hearing was told that Detective Superintendent Neil Wright, of Dorset Police, had been in charge of the police investigation into Farruk's death and had found that there was "no evidence of third party involvement" in his death.

The investigation has revealed that Farruk was previously accommodated at the Esplanade Hotel in Paignton, Devon, and began displaying aggressive behaviour in July 2023. He was “disturbed” when he was informed he was being transferred to the Bibby Stockholm in November 2023.

Witness Ashley Rangasamy stated that he was told that Abhijith Jayaseelan, the hotel supervisor at the Esplanade, had "tricked" Farruk into telling him that he would not be going to Bibby Stockholm, but to Swindon.

While Doctor Griffin said that Jayaseelan had denied taking this action and had said that he was not working at the hotel on the day of his transfer.
